Miniatures
of the clock peddler have been produced in small quantities
after the establishment of wagon roads and a railway in 1872.
The fashion of dress is always the same but the earliest figures
were wood carvings, later of tinplate and after WWII offered
as an assembly kit. Many examples have tiny working clocks
carried by the peddler in addition to a quantity for sale
strapped to a rack on his back.

A regular
visitor to every village in and around the Black Forest was
the clock peddler or Uhrentrager. Some claim he hand
crafted his clocks during the long cold winter months; then
in fair weather, peddled his wares on foot for barter. There
were few wagon roads and no public transportation; currency
was rarely exchanged in the rural areas dotted with tiny villages.
