Who produced more animated clocks, Mastercrafters of Chicago or United of Brooklyn? According to available data, United had a head-start on Mastercrafters as they began business in 1905, but of course, they weren't producing AC synchronus clocks until at least twenty-five or thirty years later. Mastercrafters wasn't in the clock business until 1947. A search through internet auction listing shows both companies produced hundreds of thousands of these inexpensive novelties sold by many major retailers that offered housewares, a very different marketing channel from the one supplying jewery stores.

The two United clocks below and showing young lads fishing, was called "Gone Fishin'" and reveal significant differences in their texture and finish of cases moulded of different plastic materials in differing molds. These are the three versions of this concept that are known.

Some collectors have compiled tables of the various model numbers only to learn of inconsistencies in both the model and the style numbers and the year likely produced. The variation in detail, finish, and the type and maker of the electric clock movement, make collecting these novelties a challenge.
