Ansonia's effort to compete in the electric clock market began just as the entire company was sold and shipped off to Russia in 1928, the year their electric clocks first appeared in their catalog. The clock movement, adaptable to 40 to 60Hz AC or DC 110 volt utility electrical power, was the invention of Francis J. Reilly.

Like many electro-mechanical clocks of the era, the Ansonia employed a solenoid to expand a spring of lift a weighted lever connected to a ratchet pawl through linkage to provide force to the escapement and motion works. Periodically as the wheel train advances, an electrical contact is made to activate the solenoid plunger, causing the ratchet pawl to advance its position on the ratchet wheel and expand the spring. The action is rapid.

This example is pendulum controlled. On the top of the case are separate sockets for connection to either AC or DC power supplies.
