The ubiquitous #86 movement was adapted by Seth Thomas designers for battery power. The rack engages a ratchet wheel with a maintaining spring to provide gravity force to the escapement. he long, heavy brass vertical rack is lifted upward by the electro magnet on the left side. The linkage iis much like a teeter-totter, raising the rack quickly to its reset position.

This movement is sometimes referred to as "the ladder" style. The electromagnet is powered by three volts DC from two No. 6 dry cells. Like many of the battery clock of the era, it too suffers from weak batteries resulting in closed circuit depletion of the dry cell chemicals which usually resulted in leakage and spill of the corrosive liquid.
