Known better for domestic water chlorinating system, Wallace and Tiernan's clock design departed from ordinary designs of the 1920s and 30s. The small compact pendulum movement was controlled by a pin-wheel escapement, a very unusual use of the device for small compact clocks.

The clocks were powered by two ordinary "D" size flashlight dry cells. A small expansion spring pulls a small ratchet pawl to drive the escapement. The spring is reset it its extended position periodically by an electromagnet upon closure of the electrical contacts. Although the pendulum bob allowed for minor timing adjustment, the label declared that adjustment was carefully made at the factory and should never require adjustment.

Wallace and Tiernan clocks were offered in many case styles, many with finely finished hardwood veneers.
