Traditional weight powered cuckoo clocks gave way to spring power after cast brass movements frames came into use by the smaller Black Forest clockmakers.

This example illustrates efforts to expand the export market with richly carved table cuckoo clocks with solid cast brass movement frames containing a fusee controlled mainspring power. The movement bears the letters of G.H.S., the trademark of Gordian Hettich & Son.

Here is a fine example of shelf cuckoo clock in the Gothic style by the famous Black Forest clockmaker Johan Baptist Beha. The eight day running movement has dual fusees to match the change in force of the mainsprings as it unwinds each week.

At left, also from Beha, is a very rare early (ca. 1850-60) shelf cuckoo with fine carvings and unique burl veneer. It too, like most clocks that Beha made, has fusee compensation on both time and striking trains..
