Black Forest clockmakers created designs that emulated the styles favored by the English. The painted wooden dial belies the origin of the clock.

The old style wood framed movement has heavy brass inset plates. Small fine arbor pivots and fusee compensation on both time and strike trains are attempts to gain a foothold among the competitors for the English market.

Thick brass plates with large pillars and fusee compensation are typical of the movements used in the finest English clocks. Yet the works of this example bear the simple WHS trademark logo of Winterhalter and Hofmeier.

The richly carved walnut case and ornate dial are features found in the best of domestic English clockmakers. The movement is arranged with nested spiral gongs at the back, set to play the melodious Westminster chimes on the quarter hours.

More closely emulating the character if the English short drop dial clock, the example at left has a painted iron dial with the Dublin Ireland retailer's name and address. Still, the wood frame fusee movement, although having heavy brass inset plates, speaks of its Black Forest origin.

Although unsigned, the clock resembles those made by Winterhalter and Hofmeier or the cottage crafters who supplied them.
