Novelty
clock with eyes that tell the time are usually made
to run only one day. a very few examples can be found
with eight day running movements. The wide variety
of aanimals and objects made with rolling eyes make
this kind of novelty clock very collectible.
It
is believed that most of the rolling-eye clocks were
made by the Oswald Company both prior to and after
WWII in Freiburg, the Black Forest. One example, carved
of wood as most early ones, carries a U.S. Patent
date of 1926. Generally, most later production is
cast.
By
far, the most popular of these charming collectibles
are Scotties, but many are Owls; this in addition
to Indians, Skulls, Gnomes, Monkeys' Cats, Lions,
Sheiks, etc.
